Shakira released Dónde Están Los Ladrones? as her fourth studio album in 1998 with Emilio Estefan acting as the album's executive producer.

After coming home from a tour for her previous album, Pies Descalzos, Shakira arrived at the El Dorado International Airport in Colombia to find that her suitcase containing the lyrics to her songs had been stolen. The incident inspired Shakira to write Dónde Están Los Ladrones? which directly translates to "Where are the thieves?"

As a fan of traditional rock music and bands like The Beatles, Nirvana, The Police, Led Zeppelin and more, Shakira used her familiarity of the genre to guide several of the album's titles.

Shakira recorded MTV Unplugged, her first live album,in 1999 at the Grand Ballroom at New York's Manhattan Center. The album was released in 2000 and ultimately earned her a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album. Shakira's MTV Unplugged became the first Unplugged performance to be recorded entirely in Spanish. The Colombian singer-songwriter primarily performed songs from Dónde Están Los Ladrones? and Pies Descalzos' lead single "Estoy Aquí" was the only song during the concert that was not from her fourth album. Shakira's MTV Unplugged is often cited as one of the greatest performances on the series, eventually going Platinum in the U.S.
