Das letzte Album, das die Bar-Kays vor der Schließung von Stax Records im Jahr 1975 veröffentlicht haben, Cold Blooded aus dem Jahr 1974, erweitert den „schwarzen Rock“-Sound, den die Band in ihrer Begleitarbeit für Isaac Hayes und andere auf dem Label mitentwickelt hat. Die Bar-Kays formten Funk zur Hauptausdrucksform ihres Sounds in den 70er Jahren, und legten damit den Grundstein für viele kommende Bands. Nach dem Verlassen von Stax wurden sie zu Superstars, aber Cold Blooded legte die notwendigen Grundlagen dafür.
