Veröffentlicht im Oktober 1981, Controversy fängt Princes sich entwickelnde Weltanschauung ein und bringt seine Lieder aus dem Schlafzimmer auf die Tanzfläche und auf die Straße, um gegen die politische Spannungen zu protestieren, die diese Ära prägen sollten. „Wir brauchen eine neue Art von Führung – steht auf, organisiert euch“, verkündet Prince in „Sexuality“ und formuliert damit eine neue Mission: dass das Persönliche (und Sexuelle) auch politisch ist und der schnellste Weg zur Befreiung ist, „lasst euren Körper frei sein“. Als Controversy veröffentlicht wurde, erklärte die New York Times: „Princes Schwarz-Weiß-Synthese ist nicht nur ein Bild dessen, was sein könnte, es ist eine Prophezeiung.“
