Gayle Wald is Professor of English and American Studies and Chair of American Studies at George Washington University. She is the author of Shout, Sister, Shout! The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe (Beacon Press, 2007). The book has been the basis of a documentary film (Godmother of Rock, dir. Mick Csáky) and a musical (Shout, Sister, Shout, dir. Randy Johnson, book by Cheryl West).
