Sophomores are full of uncertainty, but not for The Mars Volta. The Mars Volta didn't seem to face any issues with their second full-album release and fan favorite, Frances the Mute. Like its predecessor, Frances the Mute is a conceptual album with a rich, storied background and follows an adopted man. Band leader Omar Rodríguez-López wrote the album's material and recorded the members' parts individually, layering each part on top of each other. It's a unique approach for a unique album.
