The final album the Bar-Kays released before the closure of Stax records in 1975, 1974's Cold Blooded expands the "black rock" sound the band helped invent in their backing work for Isaac Hayes and others on the label. The Bar-Kays molded funk to be the main expression of their sound by the mid-'70s, laying the groundwork for many bands to come. They'd become superstars after leaving Stax, but Cold Blooded laid the necessary groundwork for that to happen.
