Sunshine of Your Love commemorates Ella Fitzgerald’s 1968 live show within the decorated, resounding walls of the Venetian Room at The Fairmont San Francisco hotel.
Ernie Hecksher’s Big Band provided the emphatic instrumentation to Fitzgerald’s first six tracks, while Tommy Flanagan’s trio was tapped for the last half of the album’s accompaniment. Beginning with buoyancy and redirecting listeners back in time to the Venetian Room, Sunshine of Your Love begins with a lively, booming delivery of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude.” The eponymous “Sunshine of Your Love” carries Fitzgerald’s fervent, throaty belts and untangles her vibrato across octaves.
