On paper, one of Roc-A-Fella’s stalwarts — Freeway — ending up on Rhymesayers didn’t add up. One of the members of Jay-Z’s posse heading to Uptown Minneapolis to make under- ground boom-bap? Who could have seen that coming? But Freeway was al- ways one of the most lyrically dexterous members of the Roc, and pairing him with a traditionalist like Jake One was a moment of great kismet. One of the best pure rapping albums of 2010, The Stimulus Package was a career album from Free, a reframing of his gifts for an audience that would acknowledge them fully.
