In case you haven’t heard about it yet, we started something called The Selector Series a few months ago and, since it’s been going so well, it’s now become a permanent fixture of our little musical oasis here. Here’s the skinny: each month, we get in touch with some of our favorite musicians/curators/friends and have them pick a few records for our member store that they can’t get enough of. Pretty simple, right? And pretty rad too if you ask us. So far, we’ve had the likes of Justin from Aquarium Drunkard and Egon from Now Again Records take the reins and this month, after a holiday break, we have none other than Courtney Barnett and Jen Cloher from Milk! Records here to do the honors.
The details are simple: the two of them picked albums from Dick Diver, Totally Mild, and a compilation from their own label and you can buy a copy of each (while they last) in our store this month. Why they picked each of these, however, is a lot more complex and so I sat down with them to talk through the reasons for these albums in particular along with a few sidesteps into the history of the Australian music scene, it’s current ups and downs, and how they each came to be who and where they are.
It runs about an hour, is full of great stuff from both of them, and is an excellent window into the two of them as artists, as people, and as lifelong music fans. They both have a refreshing sense of very articulate and purposeful simplicity about them, and I think you’ll benefit from listening to them as much as I did. Enjoy.
