Our Favorite Vinyl Releases of the Week (9/1/15)

On September 1, 2015

The following is a brief list of our favorite vinyl releases from this week. To ignore these records is to ignore the future of your collection:

Beach House - Depression Cherry

|| Purchase in Member Store ||

Our first reaction upon hearing the opening notes of the dream-pop duo's fifth studio album was a long satisfied "ahhhhhhh...."  There's something medicinal about the sound Beach House has developed over the years, the chord progressions that somehow feel trademarked, the deep tenor of Victoria's voice suspended in the haze you always picture following the band around...it's just really, really good music if we cut away all the b.s.  Depression Cherry is darker when you dig in, but not in the kind of way that kicks you in the gut...in the kind of way that tethers your own painful experiences to that of your fellow brothers & sisters. "Yes, we've been there & we're alive & we love you."

Destroyer - Poison Season

|| Purchase in Member Store ||

Guess what, Destroyer is not an easy artist...few people immediately fall in love at first listen.  And that's a good thing.  Destroyer is the artist worth pursuing over time with a confidence that your efforts will be rewarded one day.  After his 2011 album, Kaputt, gave the New Pornographers member a measure of indie breakout visibility he had a perfect window had he wanted to "ease up," but as Jamieson Cox aptly observed, "...Poison Season makes it clear that Bejar reacts to meteoric success the same way he’d react to a noble flop: by moving forward. It’s not antagonistic or anti-commercial, but it’s deliberate, pompous, and unfocused." We like Poison Season...a lot...and we like that it's not for everyone.

Yo La Tengo - Stuff Like That There

|| Purchase Album Here ||

Yo La Tengo made another Yo La Tengo record that is great (as Yo La Tengo albums always are) and you should listen to it...no joke.
