VMP Hip-Hop Turns Five

Celebrating a half-decade of must-have records in the genre

On October 11, 2022

This September marked five years of VMP Hip-Hop, VMP’s third Record of the Month subscription Track. To celebrate, we asked Hip-Hop subscribers who are still members today after receiving the first-ever Hip-Hop Record of the Month — Noname’s Telefone in 2017 — to reflect on what the Track means to them. Read below to hear from them about why they’ve continued to subscribe, their favorite VMP Hip-Hop records and more.

VMP has introduced me to many artists new and old. The hip-hop track is something I plan to be subscribed to for life. There have been multiple albums on my wish list that were well out of reach financially, considering resellers’ markups, and VMP has come thru with the repress that is almost always better than the original anyway. VMP has filled many holes in my collection. In addition to the represses being clean, there are always a few extras that add to the experience including higher quality jackets and artworks that I usually just keep with the record on my shelf.

Blu’s ‘Her Favorite Colo(u)r’ is the current Hip-Hop Record of the Month, and you can join the Track with this record now.
I have maintained my Hip-Hop Track due to for the most part it is my favorite genre of music. I’ve been a fan for over 35 years. Although I have not always been a big a fan of a few of the selections, for the most part I have enjoyed the track. My favorites are typically from the ’90s or early 2000s. It is too hard to name a favorite but I can say Noname was my biggest surprise and also the very first. I had never heard of her prior to the release and took a chance because of it was the first release. I was pleasantly surprised and do not regret getting it. I look forward to many more years to come. The best track [VMP has] in my opinion.

Having been a member of the [Hip-Hop] sub since it first started, I [am] extremely proud of the quality of the collection I now have. New artists, older artists, artists I’ve never heard of, all of them sitting on my shelves in high quality packages and a beautiful array of colour ways. As an international subscriber, the cost of the sub makes it a great way to get these sought after titles to the UK, with albums from De La Soul, Noname, Saba and Camp Lo being amongst the favourites I have received. I can’t wait to see what the sixth year brings.

Eyedea & Abilities’ ‘First Born’ was featured in VMP Hip-Hop in March 2017, but you can still get a copy here.
[My] favorite Hip-Hop release [is] Eyedea & Abilities’ First Born. To witness the growth of this subscription service and the attention to detail that has been implemented into each release has been a well invested journey. I cannot recommend this service enough!

YO!! VMP Hip-Hop has been undeniably incredible since its [inception] and has been something to look forward to monthly. The selection has been top notch and its always a treat to see which album gets the royal treatment. My favorite record may be the first Noname Telefone album, this was an artist who at the time I did not know of, but upon that first listen, I fell in love with. I respect that you guys gave such attention to a new [artists] and hope that in the future you can continue to shine light on some of the smaller names [within] the Hip-Hop community. P.S Wu Tang 4 Eva!
