As the studio band for Stax Records during the ’60s, the instrumental R&B/funk band Booker T. & the M.G.’s are most commonly stored in our collective memories as a critical backing group for the likes of Otis Redding, Carla Thomas and Sam & Dave, and after that, for the track “Green Onions.” But one of their most sought-after creations among crate-diggers is actually a Christmas album that the band made in 1966 at the height of their residency with the label.
While their non-seasonal back catalogue alone is certainly worth exploring, In The Christmas Spirit is one of the rarest reissues in the entire Stax catalogue, and at the time of VMP’s reissue, the record sells for up to $250 on Discogs. The collection consists of R&B and funk renditions of some Christmas classics, from a swanky and melancholy rendition of “The Christmas Song” to a swinging, cheeky take on “Jingle Bells.”
Today, VMP is allowing listeners to invite the mainstays of the legendary Memphis label to breathe a little soul into their holidays with a much-needed release of In The Christmas Spirit. Our brand-new pressing of the record comes on Blue Christmas Galaxy vinyl, and you can score a copy of it (along with our other exciting new holiday releases), here in the VMP store.
